American Literature Books

Other editions for the following books are fine, as are Kindle or Nook editions (mass market, paperback, Kindle/Nook, and/or second-hand editions are generally the most economical). You may also find many of these books at your local library.

The following American Literature books are subdivided by the quarter in which they will be covered in class. Siblings simultaneously enrolled in American Literature only need one copy of a book per family.

All students will need a copy of the MLA Handbook, 8th ed. (which they will likely need in college as well).

Students will read either John Steinbeck's The Pearl or Of Mice and Men. These books will be provided to students. The Pearl is a modern parable about greed. Of Mice and Men is a poignant tale about friendship and life's hardships. Both novels are very brief, but they are excellent examples of Steinbeck at his best.
